Legacy System Modernization
Completed: 15 December 2022

Overview. At CBIZ Network Solutions, I helped modernize a business-critical internal application used daily by network technicians, installers, and office staff to manage tools and track hours, PTO, and leave. The legacy Zend codebase had become hard to evolve. Our two-person team rebuilt it on Laravel to improve security, maintainability, and developer velocity.
My role
- Junior developer on a two-person team, leading much of the front-end implementation.
- Rebuilt UI with Blade components and Tailwind CSS for consistency, clarity, and speed.
- Refined UX flows for HR and field ops to reduce friction and errors.
What we delivered
- Zend → Laravel migration for a modern, opinionated foundation.
- DevOps uplift: Dockerized services, CI with Jenkins and GitLab, production deploy scripts, and BugSnap for real-time error tracking.
- Security & reliability: Leveraged Laravel’s auth/validation and hardened critical paths.
Impact
Day-to-day reliability improved, recurring bugs dropped, and the team gained a clean foundation for future features. HR tasks and technician tooling became faster and more predictable—without disrupting existing workflows.
